Staying healthy in cold weather

That cough sounds pretty bad, and that stuffed up nose isn’t helping either. Some may be used to these symptoms of winter illnesses, but there are many ways to avoid it and stay healthy.
“Good hand washing, using Kleenexes when you sneeze or cough, exercising, and drinking lots of water are good ways to stay healthy,” Nurse Sara Polley said. “It’s beneficial to keep the immune system up and running to fight sickness.”
Colds, sore throats, flu, and stomachaches are generally present throughout the winter season. Colds, which are caused by contact with mucus, are the most common. There is no cure for the common cold; however, resting and keeping fluids up can provide relief.
Some experts say that in order to reduce spreading a cold, you should stay home from school, but others disagree.
“As long as you don’t have a fever for 24 hours, you should come school,” Polley said. “If everyone stayed home due to sniffles or a sore throat, nobody would come to school or work.”
According to child.com, people usually get 6 to 10 colds every year. However, staying healthy can be simple: eating and drinking right, washing your hands, and wearing a coat. Medicines like Nyquil can help relieve symptoms, but won’t get rid of the cold. Wardrobe is also important, as wearing a jacket or coat can help people stay healthy.
“I always wear a coat, and I don’t wear shorts,” junior Matt Cooper said. “Some people look stupid because they wear nothing when it’s cold. Not me.”
